What is the history of pirates in Spain?
Spain's pirate history is rich and diverse, full of adventure and conflict.
For centuries, pirates migrated to different regions along the Spanish coast.
Andalusia with its strategic location near the Strait of Gibraltar, the Balearic Islands as an ideal base between Spain and North Africa, and the coast of Galicia with its sheltered inlets were favourite spots for piracy.
Barcelona was another prime target because of its prosperous port.
Piracy activity peaked during different historical periods.
The Golden Age of Piracy in the 17th and 18th centuries targeted Spanish ships laden with wealth from the New World.
During Moorish invasions between the 8th and 15th centuries and political unrest in the 19th century, Spain also experienced significant pirate activity.
Notable pirates such as Francis Drake, Amaro Pargo, Benito de Soto and Barbarossa each left their mark on this story.
The presence of pirates led to the strengthening of Spanish defence structures along the coast, strengthened the Spanish navy and inspired art and literature, making the pirate a recurring theme in Spanish culture.
